Matthias Maute

Matthias Maute (* 1963 in Ebingen ) is a German recorder player and composer who now lives in Montreal , Canada .

Life

Matthias Maute was born as the son of Ursula (née Fischer) and Wilhelm Maute in Ebingen , a town on the Swabian Alb in Baden-Württemberg. He grew up with three sisters. Matthias Maute studied recorder at the music academies in Freiburg and Utrecht , especially with Baldrick Deerenberg and Marion Verbruggen . In 1990 he won first prize in the soloist category of the Early Music Competition in Bruges , and in 1994 he won the Dutch Impresariat competition with the Trio Passio.

Today Maute is artistic director of the Ensemble Caprice and a member of the New York baroque ensemble REBEL as well as first flutist of the REBEL Baroque Orchestra. He has written numerous compositions for recorder. He is in demand as a teacher all over the world; he teaches recorder, chamber music and improvisation at McGill University in Montreal. His CDs have been released by ATMA Classique, Dorian Recordings, Vanguard Classics and ANTES Editions.

Matthias Maute is married to Sophie Larivière, a member of the Ensemble Caprice. The couple has two children.

Matthias Maute has been the artistic director of the Johann Sebastian Bach Society in Minnesota since June 2016 .
