Matthias Low

Matthias low (born December 18, 1958 in Hanover ) is a German biologist . He is Professor of Virology at the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin .

Life

Matthias Niederig was born in Hanover in 1958, grew up there and attended the Schiller School. Low studied biology from 1978 to 1985 in Oldenburg, Göttingen and Berlin. From 1985 to 1988 he did his doctorate at the Free University of Berlin. During this time he married for the first time and had two children. From 1989 he was laboratory manager at the Behring works in Marburg . From 1994 he got the post of department head at the Robert Koch Institute Berlin and changed his place of residence there. At the same time he became Project Coordinator at the European Network for Diagnostics of "Imported" Viral Diseases. In 1996 he completed his habilitation in Berlin. In 2005 he was appointed professor at the Free University of Berlin. Matthias Low is married for the second time and has a total of three children.

Scientific work

Matthias Low deals with the development of diagnostic tests ( ELISA , Capture ELISA, immunblot , immunofluorescence test ) for yellow fever virus , dengue virus , tick-borne encephalitis and HIV as well as the production and characterization of monoclonal antibody analyzes and in-process controls for vaccines . He is the developer of various patents , TBE vaccines and the author of various publications.

In addition to his scientific publications, he also tries to educate people about tropical diseases , tick bites and sexually transmitted virological diseases in popular articles . In university teaching, the promotion of diploma and doctoral students in his specialist areas is a focus of his work.
