Matthias Wessling
Matthias Wessling (born March 10, 1963 in Ahaus ) is a German chemical engineer and professor for chemical process engineering at RWTH Aachen University . In 2019 he was awarded the Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation.
Live and act
Wessling studied chemical engineering at the University of Dortmund from 1983 to 1987 , then went to the University of Cincinnati and obtained his diploma in 1989 . In 1993 he received his PhD in membrane technology from CA Smolders at the University of Twente .
Subsequently, Wessling worked for Membrane Technology and Research (MTR) in California from 1993/94 and from 1995 to 1997 as an assistant professor at the University of Twente and from 1997 to 1999 as head of the separation processes department in Akzo's Dutch research laboratory Nobel in Arnhem . From 1999 to 2009 Wessling was a full professor at the University of Twente, where he headed the membrane technology department and was elected dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology in 2007/08 . In 2010 he received a Humboldt Professorship and in 2011 was appointed head of the Chair of Chemical Process Engineering at RWTH Aachen University.
In the meantime, he was visiting professor at Stanford University in 2007 and 2014 .
Wessling is an expert in membrane technology, which is used, for example, for fuel cells , batteries or water treatment . Wessling is concerned with microscopic and mesoscopic systems that function on the model of biological systems and control chemical reactions, material exchange, separation and transport.
