Maty Mint Hamady

Maty Mint Hamady ( Arabic أماتي بنت حمادي, DMG Amātī bt. Ḥammādī ; * November 21, 1967 in Ayoûn el-Atroûs , Mauritania ) is a Mauritanian economist and politician ( Union pour la République ). Maty Mint Hamady has been the mayor of the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott since 2014 .

Life

Youth and education

Maty Mint Hamady was born on November 21, 1967 in the southern Mauritanian city of Ayoûn el-Atroûs and grew up in a politically active family. She attended the Lycée de Garçons de Nouakchott in Nouakchott , from which she graduated in 1986 with the Baccalauréat . After graduating from school, she moved to the University of Nouakchott , where she initially studied economics until 1998, after which she specialized in public economics in her master's degree. She graduated from university in 1990.

Professional activities

In 1991, Maty Mint Hamady began working in the finance department of the city hall of the capital, Nouakchott. In 1993 she was promoted to head of the tax department, and in 1997 she was again promoted to head of the external relations department. In 1999 she became a judge at the city's audit office . Maty Mint Hamady also made a career as a civil servant in the following years, in 2006 she moved to the Ministry of Trade. There she headed the department for competition, consumer protection and fraud control for two years and also became a member of the Mauritanian central bank . In 2009 she switched to the private sector for a short time and worked for the import and export company SONIMEX.

Political activity

On March 3, 2011, she became Minister for Public Administration, Labor and Administrative Modernization. Under their aegis, among other things, the minimum wage was raised from 21,000 (then around 50 euros) to 30,000 (then around 73 euros) Mauritanian Ouguiya . She held the office until December 12, 2013.

In the mayoral election on February 4, 2014, Maty Mint Hamady and her party Union pour la République competed against candidate Mohamed Ould Elhacen from the moderate Islamic party Tewassoul and won it. She is the first female mayor of the Mauritanian capital or the community of Nouakchott ( Communauté urbaine de Nouakchott ).

Private

Maty Mint Hamady is married and has three children. She speaks Arabic and French.
