Mauritia carana is a species of palm found in northern South America.

features

The species is similar to Mauritia flexuosa , but is smaller and differs from this species in the following features: Trunk reaches a maximum height of 15 m. Under the leaf crown it has a large collection of dead leaves and fibers. With a maximum width of 3 m, the leaves are significantly smaller and also have fewer segments. These are hanging. The leaf bases are hidden under a mass of fibers. The inflorescences are longer than those of M. flexuosa , the fruits are rounded and larger.

Distribution and locations

Mauritia carana is restricted to the western Amazon : it occurs in the extreme south of Venezuela , in the southeast of Colombia , in the northeast of Peru and in western central Brazil . The palm grows in the rainforest, in the damp savannah and on white sand along lowland rivers.
