Maurits van Praag
Maurits van Praag (born December 22, 1892 in Amsterdam ; died August 31, 1943 in the German Empire ) was a Dutch theater actor .
Life
For many years Van Praag led a rather inconspicuous artistic life on small and medium-sized stages in his Dutch homeland. Since the mid-1920s, he has been at the Schouwtoneel in Amsterdam and in small ensembles such as “Het Masker” and “Gezelschap Jan Musch”. As a Jew, the Amsterdam native has been in great danger since the occupation of the Netherlands by the German Wehrmacht. He fell into complete isolation and was finally taken to the Westerbork transit camp by the occupying forces .
With the transport of October 5, 1942, van Praag was deported eastwards, probably with the Auschwitz concentration camp as the destination. The actor was taken off the train at a stopover in Cosel (Silesia). It is believed that Maurits van Praag was deported to a small labor camp located between Cosel and Auschwitz and died there at the end of August 1943 under unknown circumstances. Van Praag had four older siblings, two of whom died of cot death. His brother Meijer van Praag, 14 years his senior, was murdered in Auschwitz in December 1942.
