Northampton ( ˈnɔːrθæmˈtən or ˈnɔːrðæmˈtən ) is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County in the US state of New York . The place is on Long Island . At the time of the 2010 United States Census , the CDP had 570 residents.

Northampton is within the Town of Southampton .

Suffolk County Community College's Eastern campus is located in Northampton.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the CDP has a total area of ​​30.2 km 2 , of which 29.9 on land and 0.3 km 2 (or 0.86%) on water.

The CDP was created for the United States Census 2000 and includes parts of the former Village of Pine Valley, which dissolved in 1991.

Demographics

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Northampton was inhabited by 468 people. The population density was 19.9 people per km 2 . There were 205 residential units, an average of 8.7 per km 2 . The population in Northampton consisted of 46.37% of whites , 44.23% Black or African American , 0.85% Native American , 0.85% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 2.35% said other races to belong and 5.34% named two or more races. 8.33% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Northamptons were distributed in 158 households out of which 38.0% had children under the age of 18. 48.7% of households were married, 20.9% had a female head of the household without a husband and 23.4% were not families. 20.3% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 5.7% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.96 and the average family size was 3.31 people.

The population was divided into 29.3% minors, 9.6% 18–24 year olds, 30.3% 25–44 year olds, 20.9% 45–64 year olds and 9.9% aged 65 years or more. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 women there were 91.0 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 82.9 men.
