The mausoleum Said Ala ad-Din is a mausoleum is the Uzbek city of Khiva , in the historic old town Ichan Qalʼа . It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage .

Building

The Said Ala ad-Din mausoleum is one of the oldest surviving structures and sanctuaries in Chiwa. Said Ala ad-Din was a Khorezmian sheikh and died in 1303. The mausoleum is a simple domed structure that was sunk into the earth.

There is an inscription on one wall that says: “He lived in Kaaba (in Mecca ) for a while and finally turned here. His name is Ala ad-Din, a unique pearl in the sea of science ”. Furthermore, the inscription says that the mausoleum was built by Hadzhagan Sheikh Sayyid Amir Kulal († 1370), of whom nothing has historically been passed on about his stay in Khorezmia. It is believed that Amir Kulal may have been linked to Said Ala ad-Din through his father Said Hamza, who relocated to Bukhara from Medina in the second half of the 13th century .

Inside the mausoleum is a striking stone majolica tomb from the 14th century. This is decorated with ornamental plants and Arabic poems. A memorial mosque is built to the east of the crypt .
