The mausoleum of Salim Chishti is considered to be one of the finest examples of Indo-Islamic architecture . It was built in 1580 and 1581 together with the palace complex in Fatehpur Sikri ( Uttar Pradesh , India) and is located within the rectangular courtyard of the great mosque there ( Jama Masjid ).

The mausoleum contains the tomb of Sufi saint Salim Chishti (1478–1572), a successor to Muinuddin Chishti of Ajmer . Salim Chishti lived in a cave near Sikri. The mausoleum was built by Mughal Mughal Akbar I , who wanted to express his respect for the Sufi saint who had predicted the birth of his son. The heir to the throne was named after Saint Salim and later ascended the throne of the Mughal Empire under the name of Jahangir .

The tomb was erected on a platform about one meter high, to which a staircase with five steps leads. The actual tomb is located in the middle of the main hall and is surrounded on all sides by filigree marble grids in the style of the Jali windows. A semicircular dome covers the tomb.

The marble building is decorated with carved stone and looks like it is made of ivory. The base is adorned with geometric mosaics made of white and black marble. A surround made of ebony (Chhaparkhat) encloses the marble cenotaph . In a is canopy with a mosaic of mother of pearl - inlaid .

The door to the main chamber is decorated with ornate patterns in arabesque style, in which Koran verses are inscribed. Brown marble surrounds the interior wall niches, the relief panels with the Koran verses have a blue background. The burial chamber, decorated with reliefs and paintings, has a white marble floor inlaid with multicolored stones.

Faith

Believers of all religions ask at the grave for the blessing of the saint and for the fulfillment of their wishes. It is believed that if you knot a thread on the marble lattice around the tomb, that thread reminds the saint of the believer's desires. The tomb is known to be visited by believers especially when they want a child.
