The Max Planck Innovation GmbH advises and supports scientists of the Max Planck Society in evaluating inventions and filing patent applications. She markets patents and technologies to industry and coaches founders in setting up new companies based on research results from the Max Planck Society. The company is responsible for the technology transfer of the institutes of the Max Planck Society.

The company was founded in 1970 as Garching Instrumente GmbH and operated from 1993 to 2006 under the name Garching Innovation .

Max Planck Innovation is currently (as of 2019) responsible for around 1,400 inventions and 17 company investments. An average of 140 new projects are added each year. Since 1979 we have accompanied over 4,000 inventions, concluded around 2,500 exploitation contracts and since 1990 we have looked after around 146 spin-offs. The total proceeds for the inventors, the Max Planck Institutes and the Max Planck Society have so far been over 450 million euros.

With this balance, Max Planck Innovation is one of the leading technology transfer institutions worldwide .

Essential for the work of Max Planck Innovation are the guidelines for knowledge and technology transfer of the Max Planck Society, last version from March 2013 and the Inventor's Guide - Notes for Inventors in the Max Planck Society , last amended in the year 2001.
