Max Birkenmaier

Max Birkenmaier (born November 17, 1915 in Zurich ; † February 25, 2002 there ) was a Swiss civil engineer .

Birkenmaier was the son of a foreman in a furniture factory, completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter and studied civil engineering at the ETH Zurich from 1936 to 1940 . Then he worked in the foundation engineering with Giovanni Rodio , who also promoted him further.

With Antonio Brandestini and Mirko Roš, Birkenmaier developed precast concrete parts ( steel clay boards for ceilings and lintels) and around 1950 the pre-stressed concrete process BBR and (with metallurgist Kurt Vogt) BBRV. It was licensed worldwide through Stahlton AG, founded by Birkenmaier and colleagues in 1945, of which Birkenmaier was director. He also sold earth and rock anchors with his company.

From 1960 to 1964 he was president of the specialist group for bridge construction and structural engineering of the Swiss Association of Engineers and Architects (SIA) and from 1962 to 1969 chairman of its standards commission 162 (reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete).

In 1969 he received an honorary doctorate from the ETH Zurich . In 1982 he received the Freyssinet Medal of the Fédération internationale de la Précontrainte , in whose Presidium he was. He was an honorary member of the SIA.
