Max Brunello
Max Brunello (* 1867 ; † August 2, 1935 in Graz ) was a Styrian cave explorer of Italian origin.
biography
In 1893 Max Brunello joined the recently founded Society for Speleology in Styria . Thanks to his love of the matter and his fearlessness, he was soon very much appreciated by his speleologists. He was the first to drive the shafts on the Schöckl and made the first surviving sketches and descriptions of the explored caves.
With Prof. Vinzenz Hilber , head of the geological department of the Landesmuseum Joanneum , he created the first cave cadastre, which in 1894 already comprised 150 caves.
However, his name is very closely linked to the discovery and exploration of the Lurgrotte . Thanks to a lucky coincidence, he was not present on the 4th excursion in the Lurgrotte, in which the other researchers were included. Thanks to his local knowledge, he was able to help save his comrades. Max Brunello was therefore awarded the Silver Cross of Merit by Emperor Franz Josef .
