from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Neumann (born July 26, 1878 in Nienstedten / Holstein ; † July 15, 1935 in Wetzlar ) was a German writer who published under the pseudonym Max Dortu .

Life

Karl Neumann grew up in northern Germany, but the family emigrated to Italy in 1894, whereby the 16-year-old ran away after stints on Lake Garda and Venice. He then made his way through Europe as a navigator and vagabond until he married in 1906. In 1914 he refused to participate in the First World War , was tried by a court martial and sent to an asylum. The staunch socialist later lived in Wetzlar. His few books are mostly about proletarian work. In 1920 he published numerous poems in the magazine Die Aktion . The pseudonym Max Dortu goes back to the revolutionary Maximilian Dortu who was executed in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1849 and was also used by him in his private sphere. "In his novel Großstadt from 1922, the author almost breaks his nameless main character in the anonymity and hectic pace of the city of Berlin."
