Maximilian Schmeding (born December 22, 1974 ) is a German specialist in visceral surgery and special visceral surgery, associate professor and director of the surgical clinic at the Dortmund Clinic . His focus is on surgery of the liver, biliary tract and pancreas as well as tumor surgery on the abdomen. Liver regeneration and optimization of organ function after liver transplants and extensive partial liver resection are also among his main research areas.

Life

From 1996 to 2002 he studied human medicine at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and the Charité Universitätsmedizin in Berlin. During this time, Schmeding completed semesters abroad in Australia, Argentina and Ecuador and completed his third state examination. While studying, he did his doctorate in Heidelberg.

From 2002 to 2010 he was an assistant doctor at the Clinic for General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery at the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin on the Virchow Klinikum campus . At the same time, Schmeding passed the specialist examination for surgery in 2008, and in 2012 the examinations to become a specialist for visceral surgery and specialist for special abdominal surgery.

In 2010 Schmeding completed his habilitation and at the same time obtained the license to teach surgery at the Charité. From 2010 to 2016 he worked as a senior physician at the clinic for general, visceral and transplant surgery at the RWTH University Hospital in Aachen, and from 2014 as senior physician and deputy clinic director. During this time he was responsible for the management of the liver transplant program and the management of the visceral medicine study center. Schmeding completed a degree in “Master of Health Business Administration” (MHBA) at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg , where he received his degree in 2014.

Schmeding has been the clinic director of the surgical clinic at the Dortmund Clinic since September 2016 .

Maximilian Schmeding is married and has two children.

Research priorities

Schmding's research focuses on liver regeneration and the optimization of organ function after liver transplantation and extensive partial liver resection, as well as laparoscopic partial liver resection.
