Maxstoke Castle

Maxstoke Castle is a castle north of the village of Maxstoke in the English county of Warwickshire . The castle from the Middle Ages is now in private hands.

history

Maxstoke Castle was built for Sir William de Clinton, 1st Earl of Huntingdon , in 1345. It has a rectangular floor plan, octagonal corner towers, a gatehouse on the east side and a residential wing on the west side. The castle is surrounded by a wide moat . Humphrey Stafford, 1st Duke of Buckingham , who bought the castle in 1437 in exchange for other manors in Northamptonshire , had extensions added. It is noteworthy that Maxstoke Castle has remained largely intact to this day.

Antiques in the castle include a 15th century chair on which Henry VII was crowned King of England after the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, and a table that belonged to Sir Everard Digby (cousin of the Digbys from Coleshill ) and around 1605 of the Gunpowder plot was planned, and a "Flüstertüre" (two doors with common door floor) of Kenilworth Castle was brought here.

The castle has belonged to the current owners, the Fetherstone-Dilke family , since the 17th century.

In the English Civil War , Maxstoke Castle was occupied by a parliamentary garrison. The castle's first known governor was Captain Layfield in 1642–1643 . The main role of the garrison shows that from March 1644 to October 1645 the captain of the garrison was a certain Henry Kendall Sr. , Landlord of Austrey , was. His son, Henry Kendall Jr. , was his lieutenant. The garrison contained several fiefs from Austrey: William Smart (son of a carpenter), Henry Spencer and John Crispe .

In the 18th century, William Dilke of Maxstoke married Mary Fetherstone-Leigh of Packwood House near Knowle . Since that time both families and houses have been closely connected.

Maxstoke Castle is open to the public once a year (usually mid-June) for local charitable causes. Groups interested in history can book a tour at any time.

The castle is listed as a historical building of the first degree and is a Scheduled Monument . Maxstoke Castle Park has served as a golf course since 1898. It was once a deer park and you can still find deer there today.
