McAfee WebAdvisor , formerly SiteAdvisor , is a browser extension from McAfee that warns users when they visit websites that are distributing malware or spam . Downloads are also checked for viruses and tips for better passwords are given.

The extension was originally developed by SiteAdvisor, Inc., a startup founded by employees of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) , and was acquired by McAfee on April 5, 2006.

reviews

WebAdvisor automatically tests the web pages with Microsoft's Internet Explorers COM objects. These are "loaded" by Python in a virtual machine . A classification is displayed for each website visited:

  • Green - Safe: The site has been tested and no serious problems were found.
  • Yellow - Caution: The test showed some results that could be of interest to the user, for example the website tried to change the basic browser settings or sent a lot of emails that were not recognized as spam.
  • Red - Warning: The test detected some serious problems: For example, this site sent the testers some spam emails or bundled adware with a download.
  • Gray - This page has not been tested or is in the process of being tested.

In addition, the McAfee SECURE symbol is given to websites that have undergone a special test by the manufacturer and are checked every day.
