McDonald Island is a nearly 1.5 km long island in the Heard Archipelago and McDonald Islands in the southern Indian Ocean . It is the largest in the McDonald Islands group .
Scientists of the British Challenger Expedition (1872–1876) mapped them in 1874. The expedition leader George Nares named them based on the name of the archipelago. It is named after the British captain William McDonald , who discovered it in January 1854 from his ship Samarang .
