Macgillycuddy's Reeks ( Irish : Na Cruacha Dubha ) is the name for a mountain range in Ireland . The Carrantuohill is the highest mountain of the Macgillycuddy's Reeks as well as the entire island (1041 m). The other two peaks of Ireland above the thousand meter border are also here, the Beenkeragh (Irish Binn Chaorach ; 1010 m) and the 1001 m high Caher (Irish Cathair ); in total the mountain range consists of over 100 peaks. The mountains represent part of the Armoric Highlands and consist of sandstone massifs formed by glaciers.
The Macgillycuddy's Reeks are located on the Iveragh Peninsula near the Killarney Lakes . The Engl. The name of the mountain goes back to the 18th century, in which it was named after the Irish clan Macgillicuddy ( Irish Mac Giolla Chuda , dt. "Son of the servant of St. Mochuda"), which was named long and late into the 20th century owned this area of County Kerry . The Irish-language name Na Cruacha Dubha simply means "the black heaps".
