The McNamara Island is a 10-km long and mostly ice-covered island before Eights Coast of the West Antarctic Ellsworthlands . It is located 30 km east of Dustin Island and is partially enclosed by the northern end of the Abbot Ice Shelf .
She was discovered by the American polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd , head of the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939-1941), during an overflight on February 27, 1940. Byrd named her after John B. McNamara (* 1891), boatswain on the Jacob Ruppert on Byrd's second Antarctic expedition (1933–1935).
