The Abbot Ice Shelf is an Antarctic ice shelf around 400 kilometers long and around 80 kilometers wide, which borders the Eights coast between Cape Waite and Pfrogner Point . The Thurston Island is located at the northern end of the western half of the ice shelf. Other islands of a corresponding size, such as Sherman Island , Carpenter Island , Dustin Island , Johnson Island , McNamara Island , Farwell Island and Dendtler Island are partially or completely enclosed by the ice surface.

Participants in the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) sighted the ice shelf during overflights in 1940; the western part was outlined using United States Navy aerial photographs in 1946 and 1947. Finally, the United States Geological Survey was able to use aerial photographs from 1966 to map the total extent of the ice shelf. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it after Rear Admiral James Lloyd Abbot Jr. (1918–2012), commander of the US naval support units in Antarctica from February 1967 to June 1969.
