The Farwell Island is a 61 km long 16 km wide and icy island before Eights Coast of the West Antarctic Ellsworthlands . It is located between McNamara and Dendtler Island in the eastern section of the Abbot Ice Shelf .
The island was discovered in February 1961 by the crews of the icebreakers USS Glacier and USCGC Staten Island . It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey using aerial photographs of the United States Navy in 1966. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1968 after Arthur Frederick Farwell Jr. (1915-2006), Chief of Staff of the Commander of the Support Units of the US Navy in Antarctica in the Deep Freeze Operations in 1968 and 1969.
