The Carpenter Island is an oval and 11 km long island in front of the Eights Coast of the West Antarctic Ellsworthlands . It is 11 km long, completely enclosed by the Abbot Ice Shelf and 27 km east of Sherman Island .

It was mapped by surveys by the United States Geological Survey and using aerial photographs by the United States Navy between 1960 and 1966. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1968 after Donald L. Carpenter, radio wave scientist at Byrd Station from 1966–1967.
