It is one of at least 37 other military prisons and internment camps in Eritrea where, according to human rights organizations, between 5,000 and 10,000 political prisoners and between 1,200 and 1,500 religious prisoners are interned under precarious conditions.

In 2013, two members of the Jehovah's Witnesses religious community died while imprisoned in Me'eter / Meitir as a result of the conditions there. Another died in 2016, a few months after being released for critical health. Together with 24 other Jehovah's Witnesses, he was locked in a metal building half-buried in the ground on October 5, 2011 for the purpose of a special disciplinary measure. He stayed there until August 2012. The state of health deteriorated due to the scorching summer heat and inadequate food and water supplies.
