Nakfa (in scientific transcription Naqfa, Arabic نقفة, also: ناكفا) is a city in Eritrea .
It is located in the northern highlands of the state in the Semienawi Kayih Bahri region , about 180 km north of the capital Asmara . The Eritrean currency Nakfa was named after this city in 1997 .
Nakfa was the headquarters of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front . The population of Nakfa is of Muslim faith.
