Mechthild Leutner

Mechthild Leutner (born November 17, 1948 in Silbach , North Rhine-Westphalia ) is a German sinologist , historian and university professor. She is considered the founder of China-related women's research.

Life

Leutner studied Sinology and History at the University of Peking and the University of Bochum, where she received her doctorate in 1978. In 1974 Leutner belonged to the first group of exchange students from the Federal Republic who studied in Beijing after the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1989 Leutner received her habilitation at the Free University of Berlin , where she was appointed professor in 1990. She has been retired since 2014.

Honors

Leutner was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2002. She is also an honorary professor at Peking University and the Faculty of History at Nanjing University.
