Medair is an international non-governmental humanitarian organization . Your work is based on the values ​​of the Christian image of man .

The association provides emergency aid and help with reconstruction after disasters, mainly in hard-to-reach regions. The organization is active in the areas of health and nutrition; Water, sanitation and hygiene ( WASH ) as well as accommodation and infrastructure.

history

Medair originally emerged from the common goal of three organizations - Youth with a Mission (YWAM), Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) and Medicaments pour L'Afrique (MEDAF) - to set up a project through rapid, practical emergency aid in and after a crisis Natural disasters could be waged. With the support of the three organizations, Dr. Erik Volkmar and his wife Dr. Josiane Volkmar-André a first aid project in Uganda; after her return to Switzerland, Medair was officially registered as a non-profit organization in 1989. Since its inception, Medair has reportedly operated in 38 countries on 6 continents .

Focus of work

Medair provides emergency relief in crises and natural disasters, and supports people in post-disaster recovery and disaster risk reduction. Within these areas, Medair's work focuses on three main areas: health and nutrition; Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH); as well as accommodation and infrastructure. Medair's goal is to reach people in remote and hard-to-reach areas. Medair currently operates in 11 countries in Africa and Asia: Syria , Lebanon , Jordan , Iraq , South Sudan , Somalia , the Democratic Republic of the Congo , Madagascar , Afghanistan , Nepal and Bangladesh . The longest-running project is in what is now South Sudan; Medair has been here since the 1990s and plays a leading role in project coordination.

International structure

Medair's international headquarters are in Ecublens in the Swiss canton of Vaud . There are also country offices in France , the Netherlands , the United Kingdom , the USA , Canada and Germany . The country organizations are independent parts of the international Medair network and each have their own board members and managing directors and act financially and legally independently. Medair eV was founded in 2001 and is a member of the German Donation Council . The managing director Viktoria Zwerschke has been in office since the beginning of 2019.

Medair (international and country offices) has approximately 1,500 employees worldwide, including approximately 1,300 in the operational areas. In 2017, the income was 72 million USD . This enabled over 2.1 million aid recipients to be helped directly.
