The André-Malraux media library is the largest public library in eastern France. It is located in Strasbourg in Alsace.

location

One of the library's reading and working rooms

The media library, inaugurated in 2008, is located on the Malraux peninsula, on the edge of the Austerlitz basin, near the Place de l 'Étoile. It stands in front of the Rivétoile shopping center, which was inaugurated that same year. The new Neudorf district is part of the extensive Deux Rives urban development project , which aimed to connect the Heyritz district to the Port du Rhin industrial area .

terrain

The media library is located in a former granary in the port area, which was built in the 1930s and closed in 2000. The transfer cranes have been preserved. After being extended with a glass and steel construction, the building is 135 m long and 35 m high.

The planning for the media library was initiated by Robert Grossmann , former President of the City of Strasbourg. The project started in 2006 and lasted two years, it cost a total of 64.5 million euros.

The renovation project was carried out by the architects Jean-Marc Ibos and Myrto Vitart . It is one of the 28 libraries and media libraries in the municipality of Strasbourg. It was inaugurated on September 19, 2008 by the Mayor of Strasbourg, Roland Ries (PS). With 11,800 m² and 160,000 documents on an area of around 20 km shelf length, it is considered the largest public library in Eastern France.

Five of the six floors of the media library are open to the public. 120 employees work in the house.
