Medical Women's International Association

The Medical Women's International Association ( Weltärztinnenbund ) is an umbrella organization of associations in around 90 countries. The aim of the organization is to improve the situation of women in the medical profession. The Medical Women's International Association works with the World Health Organization (WHO), has Category II status with the UN Economic and Social Council and is involved in the UNICEF vaccination program. The association's president is Bettina Pfleiderer .

history

The Medical Women's International Association was founded on October 25, 1919 . Before that there was a meeting of the American Medical Women's Association , at which women doctors from 16 countries were present and decided to found an international organization. Esther P. Lovejoy was elected first president . The organization's first international congress was held in 1922.

Cooperation with the United Nations began in the mid-1950s .
