When Frederick, one of her brothers, was murdered there in 1899, she returned to Portland alone. However, she visited her husband regularly in Alaska. From 1907 to 1909 she was a health officer on the Portland Board of Health . She established the first nurses' school and wrote regulations for keeping milk clean.
