The Medienhaus Eberswalde is located near the city center of Eberswalde on Karl-Marx-Platz (formerly Alsenplatz) in Eisenbahnstraße 92-93. At the 2003 Eberswalder renovation competition, a prize was awarded for the exemplary renovation of the house: “The renovation of the building was based on the historical model while preserving materials typical of the old town.” Urban development funds ensured that the building was largely restored to its original state. The only partially preserved granite base and the weather vane were rebuilt according to the old pattern.

history

The house was built in 1893 as a stately residential and commercial building. The building was realized by the master mason and carpenter Carl Becker from Eberswalde. The first large commercial tenant was the Bacchus wine shop in 1898 , which, according to an advertisement dated August 18, 1896 , was opened by the merchant Herrmann Schmidt in the Prussian town and country courier . According to the tax file of July 1, 1896, he was also the owner of the house. In 1901 , Commerz- & Privat-Bank AG, founded in Hamburg in 1870, took over the local Berliner Bank and operated an in-house branch for the following decades. According to Rudolf Schmidt , the bank was still in this house in 1940.

In the 1930s, the furniture store Carl Utesch & Co. was presented at this location. In the years of the GDR , it was the seat of VEB Retail and Restaurants HO Eberswalde, later HO-Kaufhaus Magnet . In the 1990s it housed the clothing chain Jean Pascal .

Today the house is owned by the Eberswalde housing and property management company and is a mixed residential and commercial building. Various companies are based in the media house:

  • Eberswalder Blitz Werbe- und Verlags GmbH (free weekly newspaper)
  • Express-Medien Vertrieb GmbH & Co.KG
  • Finow Datentechnik GmbH (computer hardware and software)
  • Medieneck - Admission of classified ads and advance ticket sales (part of Eberswalder Blitz Werbe & Verlags GmbH)
