Mediolanum (Whitchurch)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mediolanum was a smaller Roman city , on the site of what is now Whitchurch . Mediolanum is a common place name in the Roman world; the name means roughly central place , which is particularly true in this case, since the place is in the middle of the Shropshire plain. Mediolanum is halfway between Castra Devana ( Chester ) and Viroconium ( Wroxeter ).

The place began as a military camp that was fortified around AD 75. The military withdrew around 90 AD. Subsequently, Mediolanum became a civilian settlement that mainly extended along the Roman road. At the beginning there were mainly wooden buildings with evidence from workshops that were some distance from the street. Around 170 AD the place expanded and some stone buildings were built. One of them had a large yard and was about 83 m long. The function is unknown, but it may have been a market.

Mediolanum was fortified and inhabited until the fourth century.
