Strait of Bungo

The Strait of Bungo ( Japanese 豊 後 水道 Bungo-suidō ) lies between the Japanese islands of Kyushu , prefecture Ōita (≈ province Bungo ) and Shikoku , prefecture Ehime . It connects the Pacific Ocean with the Seto Inland Sea at the western end of Shikoku. The narrowest section of the strait with 14 km is located between the Seki peninsula with the city of Ōita and the Sada peninsula with the city of Ikata in Ehime Prefecture is called Hōyo Street ( 豊 予 海峡 Hōyo kaikyō) designated. In the strait is the 0.34 hectare uninhabited island of Mizuko, on which there is a lighthouse.

In the English-speaking world, the Strait of Bungo is best known as the setting of the 1958 film, U 23 - Tödliche Tiefen (Original: Run Silent, Run Deep), a film adaptation of the successful 1955 book by then Commander Edward L Beach Jr.
