Palazzo Venier Manfrin , also Palazzo Priuli Manfrin , is a palace in Venice in the Italian region of Veneto . It is located in the Cannaregio sestiere with a view of the Canale di Cannaregio between Palazzo Savorgnan and Palazzo Labia .

history

The palace was built on the remains of an old Priuli palace dating from the first half of the 16th century. These remains are still visible today on some parts of the rear facade.

Two centuries later the palace fell to Frederico Venier , Elena's husband , née. Priuli , who had it rebuilt in the years 1734–1737 according to plans by Andrea Tirali . His sons inherited it and Girolamo Manfrin , a well-known tobacco entrepreneur , bought it in 1788 . The new owner arranged for the building to be remodeled according to a new, classical taste and turned to the painters Giovanni Battista Mengardi and Giuseppe Zais , as well as the decorator David Rossi . In the following years he accumulated a large number of books, objets d'art and natural history objects and turned them into his own museum.

After Girolamo Manfrin's death in 1802, the complex fell to his son Pietro Manfrin and in 1835 to his daughter Giovanna Manfrin . In 1849 the inheritance was divided between Giovanna's two sons and the palace finally fell to Lina Plattis in Sardagna .

description

The palace has a wide facade over three floors. The main facade is mostly classical and made of Istrian limestone ; it anticipates elements of rationalism , which can be seen above all in the design of the two rows of rectangular window openings on the two main floors, the first of which is provided with a baluster . These simple windows allow perfect lighting of the interior. Cornices separate the individual floors from one another and, together with the serrated eaves, divide the facade horizontally.

The interiors are decorated with 17th-century paintings and art objects by Giuseppe Zais and Giambattista Mingardi . Behind the palace is a garden that adjoins the large park of Palazzo Savorgnan and is also open to the public.
