The Galata Maritime Museum ( Galata - Museo del mare ) is the largest museum of this orientation in the Mediterranean. It is located on the site of the Porto Antico of Genoa .

It was opened in 2004 as part of the celebrations for the nomination of Genoa as European Capital of Culture 2004 . The museum is located in Palazzo Galata (named after the ancient colony Galata ) in the Darsena district , where the galleys were built during the city republic .

In addition to the replica of a Genoese galley in its original size, the museum offers numerous interactive exhibition rooms in which “life at sea” is illustrated. A large part of the exhibition is devoted to maritime trade during the times of the Maritime Republic of Genoa , but there are also sections on the topic of overseas ships with nautical charts and a simulation of a storm on Cape Horn . The submarine Nazario Sauro (S 518) , which was decommissioned in 2002, will also be exhibited .

The special exhibition Memoria e Migrazioni , open since 2011, is dedicated to Italian migration . It shows the lot of the exploited immigrants in Genoa in the 19th century as well as that of the Italian emigrants who traveled to America and Argentina on the overcrowded decks of the emigrant ships and founded an Italian diaspora there. The current migration is also shown. The special exhibition is to be integrated into the new Museo nazionale dell'Emigrazione italiana housed in the Commenda di Pré in Genoa , the opening of which is planned for 2020/21.

There are also bookshops, a café with an outdoor terrace and exhibition rooms on other topics in the museum building. Due to its close proximity to Genoa's museum mile ( Le Strade Nuove with the Palazzi dei Rolli ) and the Porto Antico , the Galata Maritime Museum is a popular destination in Genoa.

In 2005, Galata merged with Commenda Museum-Theater and Naval Museum of Pegli in the Mu.MA - Institution Museums of the Sea and Migration , in order to better cover the topics of the sea and migration.
