The two boats of the second series were named not only after the scientists Leonardo da Vinci and Guglielmo Marconi , but especially after the two Marconi class boats of the same name from the Second World War. The other boats bear the names of the submarine commanders Nazario Sauro , Carlo Fecia di Cossato , Salvatore Pelosi , Giuliano Prini , Primo Longobardo and Gianfranco Gazzana Priaroggia .
The four boats of this class remaining in service were extensively modernized between 1999 and 2002. They are supplemented by new boats of the submarine class 212 A and then replaced. All still active boats of the Sauro class are stationed in Taranto and belong to the submarine forces command (MARICOSOM).
By the end of the 1990s, the Sauro-class boats were supplemented by four smaller Toti-class boats .
