Salvatore Pelosi
Salvatore Pelosi (born April 10, 1906 in Montella near Avellino , † October 24, 1974 ) was an Italian naval officer.
Military career
Salvatore Pelosi was trained at the Naval Academy in Livorno . He then served u. a. in the Italian East Asia Squadron (including on the battleship Caio Duilio and the Italian naval command in Tientsin ). After a training course at the Naval Academy in Livorno, he served on various cruisers and destroyers .
When the Second World War broke out , he was in command of the submarine Torricelli stationed in the Red Sea . On June 23, 1940, he took up combat there with superior British forces. After being forced to surface, he inflicted considerable damage on the British units with his on-board cannon and the remaining torpedoes . The crew saved the seriously wounded Pelosi from sinking.
After returning from captivity, he took over command of the destroyer Alfredo Oriani in 1948 , and from 1951 the naval command in the Italian UN trust territory of Somalia . In 1969 he retired from active service as a Vice Admiral .
An Italian Sauro- class submarine is named after Salvatore Pelosi (the third construction lot in the class also bears his name).
