Megabruchidius dorsalis , also known as the Asian Gleditschia seed beetle , is a species of leaf beetle from the subfamily of the seed beetles (Bruchinae).

features

The beetles reach a length of 4.3–6 mm. The basal parts of the antennae, the front two pairs of legs and the end of the rear femora are colored light red. In addition, the ventral side is red. The white spot on the pronotum in front of the scutellum is sharply defined. The fore wings do not cover the entire abdomen . They are brownish in the front central area, while they are patterned black and light blue-gray on the sides and in the rear area.

distribution

The beetle species comes from East Asia. It was probably introduced to Europe with plants. In 2012 it was detected in Switzerland. The species has now been observed in other countries in Central Europe, including Hungary, Slovakia, Italy, France and Germany. In addition to Megabruchidius dorsalis , the related species Megabruchidius tonkineus was introduced to Europe.

Way of life

The species develops in the seeds of Gleditschien (leather pod trees) and other legumes (Fabaceae). The species overwinters as a pupa in the seeds.
