Olof Immanuel Fåhræus (born March 23, 1796 in Slite , Gotland , † May 28, 1884 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish politician and entomologist .

Life

Fåhræus studied at Uppsala University . After graduating from the chancellery, he was a clerk from 1816 and made a career at Swedish customs. In 1834 he became State Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Finance. He became a Councilor of State and Minister of Civilization from 1840 to 1847, implementing some significant reforms. He founded navigation and agricultural schools, abolished the guilds, set up chambers of industry and crafts and campaigned for the reform of criminal and inheritance law (equal rights for daughters in succession). In 1847 he became governor ( Landshövding ) of Gothenburg and showed skill in the political unrest in 1848. In 1864 he moved to Stockholm. From 1867 to 1872 he was the representative of Gothenburg and Bohus in the Swedish House of Lords (Första kammaren). In the parliament (Reichstag), in which he was until 1878, he mainly advocated free trade.

His twin brother was the politician Johan Fredrik Fåhræus (1796-1865). In 1823 he married his cousin Laura Adolfina Sturtzenbecker (1803-1875).

Honors and memberships

When La Société Cuvierienne was founded in 1838 , he was one of the 140 founding members of the society. In 1831 he became a member of the Royal Science and Literature Society in Gothenburg , in 1840 of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . He was also an honorary member of the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala (1845), the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies (1848) and the Royal Physiographical Society in Lund (1878). In 1842 he was knighted by Karl XIV. Johann (Sweden) . In 1877 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in Uppsala.
