Schematic sketch of Wedge Tomb using Iceland as an example

The megalithic systems of Ballynakill ( Irish Baile na Cille ) on the slope of the Knockdrummore ( Cnoc Droma Móir ) in County Galway in Ireland have largely run out. To the west of the hamlet Abbey, a portal tomb , the wedge tomb "Marblehill South" and the stone circle of Cartron South on the Knockdrummore, north of Ballin Lough , are somewhat preserved .

Marblehill South

The relatively large Wedge Tomb, which collapsed in the middle, is over 7.0 m long and 1.3 m high and lies in the townland of Marblehill ( An Creigín ) next to a dirt road, about 100 m from the R353 road. It is heavily overgrown and appears to have had three capstones. The large bearing stones are still upright in the ground. The Wedge Tomb was originally located under a mound of earth or stones. "Wedge Tombs" ( German  "Keilgräber" , formerly also called "wedge-shaped gallery grave") are double-walled, aisle-free, mostly undivided megalithic buildings from the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age .

Portal tomb

The Tomb portal is marked as "Cromlech" on the OS map. It is located southwest of Kilcrimple ( Cill Chruimthir ) cemetery on a gentle slope. The small collapsed Tomb portal is oriented northwest-southeast and consists of a chamber about 2.0 m long and 1.2 m wide.

Ballynakill Stone Circle

The Ballynakill Stone Circle (also called Cartron South) is a relatively small but impressive example of the monument group. Mac Mahon assigns the stone circle to the Cork-Kerry group .
