The listed castle Unterschönreuth is located in the district of the same name in the Upper Palatinate town of Kemnath in the Tirschenreuth district (Schönreuth 1). It stands on the eastern edge of the village by a pond.

history

There were three aristocratic residences in Schönreuth, of which only the Unterschönreuth Castle has survived. The Oberschönenbuch Reuth castle has been destroyed in a fire of 1819th Moreover, here was a Burghut of the castle Waldeck , which is not clear whether there has been a stand-alone system or around the Castle Oberschönenbuch Reuth. It is also not clear on which of these residences the local nobility of Schönreuther is to be located. In any case, these are already mentioned in the Leuchtenbergers' fief book before 1400.

The name Unter Schönreuth was first mentioned in 1651. It could have been the share in the Leuchtenberg fiefdom mentioned in 1488 (Ansitz am Weiher), which belonged to Kaspar Bärnklau . From 1518 to 1550 Sebastian Bärnklau is the fief owner. Then he sells the estate to his brother-in-law Adam Pfreimder , who is named in the land register from 1599 to 1615 . From 1617 Hans Pfreimder the elder and from 1652 his son Hans Adam the younger are registered here. Until 1709 Hans Matthias Pfreimder is still mentioned . In 1747 ownership passed to von Mosern , who also owned the other shares in Schönreuth. In 1790 the entire property came to the von Cammerloh family . In 1694 the castle burned down together with the Obernschönreuth estate , but was rebuilt in the following years.

Unterschönreuth Castle then and now

During the siege of Waldeck Castle in 1704, this was shot at from Schloss Unterschönreuth. The castle appears in the picture as a two-storey square building with a gable roof . There were two farm buildings next to it, which were connected to the castle by a picket fence.

Today the former castle is a three-story, plastered solid building with a hipped roof and drilled, profiled walls. The building has renewed baroque designs. A house Madonna dates from the early 18th century. In addition, low buildings from the 18th or 19th century can be seen. The castle is located on a pond in which a fountain with a fountain is built.

The castle also had a castle chapel , which was first built in the 14th century and dedicated to St. Laurentius or St. Aegidius was consecrated. According to a donation from 1477, the Bernklau family from Schönreuth donated a mass here. In 1694 the chapel also fell victim to the aforementioned fire; the rebuilt second chapel was dedicated to St. Consecrated to Sebastian . In the afternoon of August 2, 1819, the Portiunculafest , lightning struck the upper castle tower, the fire spread to the church and laid the upper castle with three other houses to rubble and ashes. In 1843/44 the people of Schönreuther built their chapel for the third time using old masonry.

In the 1980s and 1990s the palace was inhabited by the opera singer Peter Hofmann (1944-2010), who was also known as a rock musician.
