The Forchheim II tower is located in the Forchheim desert in the Münchenreuth district of the Upper Palatinate town of Waldsassen in the Tirschenreuth district .

history

Compared to the tower hill Forchheim I, this tower hill castle is the higher of the two tower hills in the Münchenreuther Wald. It seems to be dated back to the late Middle Ages .

Location and appearance

The tower hill is located about 2 km north-northwest of the church of Münchreith or near the Kebsbach.

The almost square tower hill measures around 5 × 6 m. A rectangular pit can be seen on the plateau, and there are traces of a rampart on the east and north sides. The hill is surrounded by a ditch from which the hill protrudes about 1.2 to 1.8 m. Perhaps this trench could be filled with water from the nearby Kebsbach. Access seems to have been possible from the north via the wet ditch. During excavations in 1963, many shards without signs of use were found (roof tiles, bowl tiles). These date from around 1400. It is believed that it was pottery waste that may be related to a reconstruction or repair. Compared to Forchheim I, this tower hill is much younger and may be associated with a new building for Forchheim.
