The lost care castle Bärnau was located in the northwest of the Upper Palatinate town of Bärnau in a corner within the city wall (Schlossgasse). The parish church of St. Nicholas next to it was slightly higher than the castle. In the former area of the medieval castle, underground archaeological findings have been proven.

history

In 1312 Adalbert von Seeberg and Heinrich the Elder, Vogt von Plauen, sold Bärnau Castle with Griesbach and Hohenthan to the Waldsassen Monastery , to which they had been pledged for 200 shock groschen by King Adolf von Nassau since June 4, 1296 . In 1311 a "Konrad von Haslau " was named as the judge of "Pernowe" and was killed by subjects of the monastery. In connection with the granting of town charter (first on September 3, 1343 by Emperor Ludwig , confirmed again on March 2, 1354 by King Charles IV. ), And the establishment of the Bärnau ban mile , an "amptmann" was named to Bärnau, who made this ban mile should monitor. He was under King Wenceslas IV. Nurse and served along with the city as a judge; At that time the judge and caretaker was Otyken von Lazowitz.

With the deposition of King Wenzel IV as the “unworthy owner of the holy Roman empire”, Count Palatine Johann conquered the area around Bärnau, which was incorporated into the Electoral Palatinate in 1405 and the “ambt people of Bernaw” had to swear an oath of allegiance to the new sovereign. Since this change, a new seal has been put into use, which is still used today (a bear with a quartered shield on a dotted background in which the Palatinate lion alternates with the Wittelsbach diamonds). A care office for the Electoral Palatinate was thus installed. Furthermore, the keeper of Bärnau also received the regional court authority over the Waldsassen monastery, this remained the lower jurisdiction over his subjects; the division remained controversial. Until the reorganization of the offices at the beginning of the 19th century, the administrative area of the Bernau nursing office remained in place (Ellenfeld, Dürnkonreuth, Naab, Hofmark Thanhausen, Landsassengüter Wendern and Herrmansreuth, Gut Heimhof, as well as the so-called "Plattenberg subjects" located northeast of Neustadt an der Waldnaab in the villages of Rozendorf, Wurms and Wurmsgefäll). The castle property was considered a knightly bag loan in the possession of the municipality of Bärnau.
