The listed Wildenreuth Castle is located in the district of the same name in the Upper Palatinate town of Erbendorf in the Tirschenreuth district (Wildenreuth K1).

history

In 1294 the local aristocrat Marquard Wild is named as a documentary witness for the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg . Presumably, the foundation of the place and castle comes from the Counts of Sulzbach and the area came to the Staufer after their extinction and that only to the Leuchtenbergers. In 1300 Iacof the Wild appears as a documentary witness of the Teutonic Order House in Eger . In the 14th century, the Wild are also named as the owners of Krummennaab Castle . In 1462 the brothers Jorg (Georg) and Adam Wild had to open the castle to the Wittelsbach Duke Ludwig the Rich in his feud against the Elector Albrecht of Brandenburg , as the brothers saw no possibility of defending themselves against the superior power of the Duke. As a result, the Wilds became vassals of the Wittelsbach family. This family is mentioned in this area with many ramifications until 1611. Junker Hanns Wiltt von Diebsfurth died childless in 1611 and the Count Palatine gave Wildenreuth to Hans von Podewils from a Pomeranian family. The barons of Podewils are the owners of the castle to this day.

Wildenreuth Castle then and now

The medieval castle was on the eastern edge of the village on a low hill spur. At that time there were buildings on the north, west and east sides, on the south side a circular wall closed off the rectangular courtyard. On the southwest corner of the stand keep . The main castle stood on the highest point of the hill, around which a watercourse used to be. To the west was a trapezoidal outer bailey, on the edge of which the parish church of St. Jakob stands today. This church always belonged to the country estate and the country estate was the patron saint. The castle church has been a simultaneous church since 1663 , which means that it belongs equally to the Catholic and Protestant parishes and is still used today by both denominations for their services. The church was rebuilt in 1809 and rebuilt after a fire in 1851.

Today the castle is a three-storey, plastered solid building with a hipped roof and segmented arched windows, which was rebuilt after the fire of 1854 in the neo-renaissance style. The stately square tower with a half-hipped roof still comes from parts of the Romanesque keep. Under Friedrich Karl von Podewils, the castle was rebuilt in 1911 with bay windows on both long sides and a round arched portal as well as a northern extension with round corner towers with pointed domes . An outbuilding belongs to the castle; this is a one-storey, partly plastered quarry stone building with a gable roof , a dwelling and granite reveals from the 19th century. In addition to a pavilion, a wooden rotunda with a tent roof from the 19th century, there is still a preserved section of the associated old quarry stone wall. In addition, archaeological finds were made in the area of the castle and the simultaneous parish church of St. Jakob of the previously medieval castle complex.

The castle is now used as a hotel managed by Eva von Podewils. The castle is occasionally made accessible to the public through cultural events (Christmas market, so-called “Wildenreuther Wintermärchen”).
