Ottengrün Castle

The listed Ottengrün Castle is located in the Ottengrün district of the Upper Palatinate municipality of Bad Neualbenreuth in the Tirschenreuth district (Ottengrün 3 and 3a).

history

Like Hardeck Castle, Ottengrün seems to have passed from the Falkenbergs to the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg after 1252 . The place was first mentioned in 1392 as "Ottengrunne" and then again in 1395 in the Eger tax book. The fiefdom was given to the Bärner family before 1350 and to the Lamminger family between 1360 and 1460. However, a "Fridrich Hekchlin" is named as the fiefdom holder in the Leuchtenberg fief book around 1400. From 1460 to 1472 Jörg Jur ', a citizen of Cheb, was called "Erber vester zu Ottengrün". His successor was Hans Jur zu Ottengrün, mentioned in 1509. His successors were Niklas Jur and, with interruptions, Sebastian Jur from 1518 to 1551. Then the estate was sold to his cousin Christoph Elbogner von Unterschönfeld. After his death († 1581) Wolf and Wenzel Elbogener lived there. After the death of "Ventzel Elbogener zue Ottengrun" († 1590) the property passed to Wolf's sons, Wolf Wilhelm, Hans Adam and Wolf Christoph. After the property was divided up, it was reunited in 1600 under Wolf Christoph Elbogener. After his death († 1617) it was first looked after by administrators and in 1628 came to his son. After an economic decline, he sold it to Hans Ulrich von Burhus, carer of Tirschenreuth († 1646). Then it came under Palatinate administration and the owners changed in quick succession: Peter von Bischera (1653–1654), Georg Otto von Ottengrün (1654–1657), Georg Christoph Daniel von Froschhammer (from 1668), the Multz von Waldau (1688–1657) 1696) and Junker von Oberkonreuth. The latter sold Ottengrün to the city of Eger and it became a civil estate. In 1705 it came back to the Juncker von Oberkunreuth, 1711 to the Weller von Molsdorf, 1716 to Werndl von Lehenstein and 1799 to Andreas Wohlrab. It was sold to Johannes Schmaus von Kitzingen in 1820, to Count Berchem von Haimhausen in 1824, to Clemens von Schmaus in 1838 and to Glas in 1843.

Construction of Ottengrün Castle

Due to the many sales, Ottengrün kept falling. Originally the castle consisted of two complexes, a core castle and a front castle. This division could still be seen on the land register plans from 1846.

In the eastern part of the complex is the so-called manor house (head building of the south wing) from the 18th century. This two-storey, plastered solid structure has a high gable roof, drilled fins and a gable over a projecting eaves cornice and four window axes. A living and utility wing is attached. The west wing is a massive barn with a cellar from the 19th century, a single-storey solid building with a gable roof and a single-storey extension on the eaves. The north wing consisted of three houses, of which the middle one was demolished. The eastern building is the so-called administrator's house, a two-storey, plastered solid building with a high mansard roof , a simple plaster structure and granite walls from the 18th and 19th centuries (today gutted and in need of renovation). The ensemble includes an enclosure consisting of a sloping wall made of medieval quarry stone masonry and a driveway with piers crowned with cones.

The complex, which has meanwhile been largely renovated (mansion, administrator's house, barn, castle garden with a stream and fruit trees) is currently being offered for sale.
