The large stone grave Lengerich-Wechte I

The gallery grave of Wechte I , a district of Lengerich in North Rhine-Westphalia , was discovered and excavated in 1927 during sand mining. The Rimbeck- type system is located in Brochterbecker Strasse opposite the church on a meadow. The 2.5 m wide gallery grave with a preserved length of 35 m must once have been at least 40 m long.

During the excavation, the stone pavement floor of the chamber was still intact. However, granite and Osning sandstone blocks on the sides and the capstones had already been removed or sunk in the ground to enable better agricultural use of the area. Occasionally, dry masonry made of flat rock filled the gaps between the bearing stones, which were up to 1 m wide. Access to the chamber could not be established. It was probably made from the narrow side that started out.

In addition to human bones and the remains of a few hundred ornate ceramic vessels of the funnel beaker culture , several flint and rock axes and tools made of flint and bone as well as jewelry made of amber , gagat , copper and quartz were found. After the excavation was completed, the condition was preserved and the supporting stones that were still in place were erected. In addition, some bearing stones from a second destroyed megalithic grave Wechte II , about 800 m to the southwest, were used.

The Wechte cairn grave is located nearby .
