Megamix

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A megamix is the stringing together or mixing of components of several songs. There are many types of megamixes. They can be differentiated on the one hand by the type of music (e.g. House Megamix, Dance Megamix, Techno Megamix, ...), and on the other hand according to the occasion of the production (e.g. Summer Megamix, Yearmix, Artistmix ...). German-speaking pop stars also widely publish a megamix as an overview of their (life) work.

The term mega does not necessarily mean that it has to be a very long mix, but only that many songs are at least hinted at. For example, there can be space for 20 tracks of 4 minutes each on a CD-length mix, but also 160 tracks of 30 seconds each. In principle, megamixes can be compared to a hit medley or the overture of a musical, in that songs are strung together, suggested or combined with one another. A large part of megamixes is produced by adding samples (music or speech fragments ) or key samples (loops).

The mega-mix principle has become known through various clubs and discos, where the club mixes (which usually only start or end with beats) are played overlapping on the turntables with the help of a mixer . Nowadays, digital productions can also be found more and more frequently, so that the result does not have to be limited to the live performance.

In Germany , megamixes are mainly known for the illegal deep dance creations that DJ Deep has been producing since the early 1990s. He was inspired by the Dutch mix guru Ben Liebrand , who has been  creating his own creations from well-known songs since the 1980s - initially with tape decks . Nowadays, the deep dance mixes pressed on CD in the 1990s achieve astronomically high prices at illegal auctions. DJ Deep has been producing legal megamixes since 2002 - often together with his partner Studio 33 - which are regularly featured in the German album charts. The two mix talents DJ Deep and DJ Studio 33 publish their numerous mix series mostly under the name SWG-Team - which stands for “that's how it's done”. Since then, so-called “free riders” have been producing illegal mega-mixes ( fakes ) of rather moderate quality under the name “Deep Dance” , which are also very popular with collectors. Fake history sequels are also published at regular intervals under the pseudonym “Studio 33”. Inspired by the three fete mixes that Deep and 33 constructed on behalf of Polystar from the Fetenhits series, illegally created mix series with u. a. called "Deep Party Mix" or "Studio 33 - Party Compilation". Nowadays, there are more and more megamixers from all over the world who produce or offer their works primarily for certain radio stations. Big names in the megamix industry include DJ SandStorm (3fm), The Dizzy Dj, Oliver Momm ( Eins Live ), Martin Pieters (Radio Decibel), DJ Hysterical (Deep FM) and DJ Deep ( Radio ffn ) and of course Ben Liebrand ( Radio Veronica ).

The fake series Deep Dance (Fake) and Studio33 (Fake) are also still in business. Overall, these fake series rarely have the high quality of the original earlier appearances. Their cult status remains for the remix scene. Today's bootleg mixes can be found at almost every flea market or "under the counter". These bootleg mixes can be purchased in almost all of Germany, as well as on Mallorca and Denmark at flea markets, weekly markets and in "DJ shops".
