DJ Deep

DJ Deep (born January 2, 1968 as Andreas Peine ) is a German remixer and DJ from Schermbeck . He achieved fame in the 1990s through the so-called deep dance mixes.

Deep dance mixes

Andreas Peine began his musical activity in the late 1980s as a hobby with a double cassette deck. He had mixed experience as a DJ in the Glaspalast discotheque in Dinslaken . He later expanded his recording studio : the 2-track and later the 8-track Revox tape machine were replaced by digital devices. Now the key sampling characteristic of the “deep mix” was also possible. DJ Deep was significantly influenced by the Dutch remixer Ben Liebrand .

Between the end of the 1980s until mid-2000 DJ Deep was responsible for 66 episodes of Deep Dance -Mixe (also Deep Mix called), so-called bootleg - megamixes . The partially illegally produced mixes comprised around 70 songs per CD. Each of the CDs started with a jingle that changed from CD to CD, but was always unmistakable.

In 1997 he released the mix Deep Dance 50 , a kind of "Best of Deep" (1987-1997), which sold over a million times. This was re-released in 2004 as a video CD and backed up with video sequences from Japanese anime films (Deep Animix). The "Studio 33, 23rd Story, Single Top 100 1998", a hybrid of all the songs that were in the charts at the time, was also successful.

illegality

The illegality of the mixes was based on the fact that the musicians did not receive any royalties for their participation, for example no GEMA fees valid for Germany . GEMA had been on record with Deep Dance since 1993. Proponents argued that it was through these mixes that many songs became known to the public.

Towards the end of the 1980s, tapes were pressed onto CDs . Due to the higher numbers, deep dance music became more widespread. The CDs were sold "under the counter" at flea markets and in record stores at a unit price of around 30 to 50 marks from 1992  . GEMA reckoned with an estimated economic loss of around 150,000 marks per year for the Deep Dance series alone.

The Essen Regional Court sentenced those involved to suspended sentences for reducing taxes and commercial production of illegal sound carriers. The distributors also received prison sentences. Andreas Peine and Uwe Jagusch received a fine.

The production of bootlegs came to a complete end on June 5, 2000, when 32 people involved in sales and production were arrested during over 50  house searches in the Ruhr area. Over 200 police officers were on duty. There was also a house search of the operators of the fan website “www.deepdance.de”. The investigators suspected that orders could be placed using a newsletter registration form.

The "Deep Dance Series" has been illegally continued since 2000 by imitators (starting with Deep Dance Vol. 67) and free riders .
