Mehdi Rajabian , Persian مهدی رجبیان(Born October 1989 in Sari ) is an Iranian composer and Setar musician.

Life

Rajabian learned Iranian music within a few years from traditional music masters. As a musician, composer and producer he took part in the production of several music albums and research albums such as B. "The History of Iran Told by Setar". As a sound engineer, he was involved in various music albums. Rajabian began studying music, but was not allowed to continue studying in this field after his arrest in 2013.

Activities and arrests

Mehdi Rajabian was involved in the publication and production of music albums as a publisher and quality manager. He also ran a website called Bargmusic for alternative Iranian music, which also offered a platform to other underground musicians in Iran. Rajabian, along with his independent filmmaker brother Hossein Rajabian and the composer and Setar musician Yousef Emadi, was arrested by Iranian security forces in his office on October 5, 2013 and taken to Section 2A of Evin Prison . All three spent more than two months in solitary confinement .

The arrest meant that he could not finish his project, the recording of the research album "History of Iran told by Setar as a musician". When he was arrested, all of his music recordings and hard drives were confiscated.

Reactions to the arrest

Many activists responded to Rajabian's arrest, including Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa Director Said Boumedouha. A campaign for the release of the artist Rajabian followed, which was supported by more than twenty thousand artists around the world.

Also Free Muse , the world's most important organization in the fight against the persecution of musicians, launched a campaign against the imprisonment Rajabians. Several artists from around the world joined this campaign. In addition, PEN , the European Council for Artists , the Council for Songwriters and Composers of Europe and twenty other associations support the campaign. Ahmed Shaheed, the United Nations Representative for Human Rights in Iran, prepared an annual report, which, along with letters from more than four hundred musicians and media representatives, was presented to Ali Jannati , Minister of Culture and Islamic Leadership.

Court ruling

Mehdi Rajabian's file was processed by Judge Moghiseh in Section 28 of the Revolutionary Court in the summer of 2015. He was sentenced to six years' imprisonment and a fine for illicit art, insulting religious sanctities, and advertising against the regime. That ruling was changed to three years 'imprisonment and three years' probation on appeal at Branch 54 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court .

Reactions of Rajabians

On Music Freedom Day, Freemuse and the official Music Freedom Day website supported the Rajabian protest movement. Rajabian reported on his Instagram page that he was selling his only fortune - his Setar - for the payment of the fine as part of his sentence. The Freemuse Foundation also supports the sale of the Rajabians instrument.
