Freemuse is an international non-governmental organization based in Copenhagen that promotes artistic freedom around the world.

Founding history

Freemuse was founded in 1998 at the World Conference on Music and Censorship in Copenhagen to take action against specific human rights violations against musicians and composers worldwide. The organization sees the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations as its working basis and regards the possibility of free expression through music as a fundamental human right. In 2011 the organization expanded its scope of activity, originally limited to music, to include all forms of artistic expression.

Working method

The main focus of Freemuse's work is the documentation of censorship and persecution and attacks against artists, informing other human rights organizations and the public, the worldwide networking of persecuted artists and their support e.g. B. in the case of arrests or in court proceedings.

Freemuse gained worldwide attention with the organization of the annual Music Freedom Day and the Freemuse World Conference on Censorship in Music, which took place twice in Copenhagen and once in Istanbul .
