Milestone in Konin

The Konin milestone is the oldest milestone in Poland .

The stone carved from sandstone is in Konin , in the middle of the path between Kruszwica and Kalisz , next to the Gothic St. Bartholomew's Church. Its height is 252 cm. It bears a Latin inscription from the year 1151. The presumed founder of the building is mentioned in the inscription. Translated it reads roughly:

“In the year 1151 of the Incarnation of our Lord
According to Kalisz von Kruszwica, here almost the middle point
This shows the instruction of the way and justice
which the Comes Palatine Piotr ordered to make
and he also carefully cut this way in half.
In his memory, every traveler should
pray judge the good Lord God. "

The milestone was originally erected on Schlossplatz (Töpferplatz) and moved to its current location in 1828.
